From Chris Holmes - U15 head coach.
“Heartbreak for the 15’s as they lose the U15 Plate Final on the last play of the game.
In what was definitely a tale of two halves, due to uncharacteristic mistakes the boys were down 28-7 at halftime. With some soul searching in the team talk, the boys were told to go out there and restore some pride and what followed was one of the finest displays by the team.
Utilising the big forwards, Tigers repeatedly punched holes through the Newmarket’s defence, giving the backs a front foot platform to wreak havoc. With 10 minutes to go the Tigers had raced into a 38-28 lead. However, due to a very unlucky yellow card the boys had to see out the remainder of the game with 14 men. The combination of fatigue and the extra man began to pay dividends for Newmarket as they scored quickly to come within 5. With the last play of the game they went across the line again and despite Tigers pleas that it was held up the try was awarded to give Newmarket the win.
Despite the loss, Ely gave a glimpse of what is to come next season. With new players arriving and a revitalised belief we will be back to finally avenge our final heartbreak”.
Heads held high gents. You’re a great group and we’re sure there is much more to come in the future!
